Thompson man stabbed while defending family as assailants invade home on Christmas Eve

A home invasion occurred on Christmas Eve, December 24th, at about 1:05 a.m. in Thompson, MB.

Thompson RCMP were called to a residence on Elm Street.

Upon arrival, they entered the home and found obvious signs of a struggle and blood throughout but no residents. Shortly afterward, they found a 35-year-old man who was returning to the home. The man was walking and suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers provided first-aid and he was immediately taken to hospital by paramedics in critical condition with serious injuries.

Portage la Prairie School Division wrapping up a busy year of growth and change

A busy calendar year within the Portage la Prairie School Division is about to wrap up when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. 

With a new year approaching, Marie Hélène Hoggarth, Chairperson for the school board, caught up with PortageOnline to discuss 2023.

"It's been a busy year," says Hoggarth, highlighting the growth in the division. "All our schools are, sort of, busting at the seams right now. It's been a wonderful year of growth in population for our schools, and it's fairly exciting. We are hoping that, eventually, we can qualify for a new school."

St. Claude hit with barrage of scam calls

Someone has been trying to make St. Claude residents enjoy somewhat of a less than a merry Christmas.

Residents of St. Claude have contacted the RCMP about a scammer who has been calling homes over the last several days. He is evidently using the phone book, seeing as he knows information about what each victim's address is. However, he also knows a person's make of vehicle.

Among those whom he called, some people report the scammer first determined if it was a man or woman who answered the phone, so that he could refer to them as "Dad" or "Mom."  

Manitoba RCMP bust 55-year-old with drugs and cash near Fork River 

A 55-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after a traffic stop last Saturday. 

According to police, it all started on December 16, at 1:05 am, when a Winnipegosis RCMP officer on patrol conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Highway 20 near Fork River. 

During the stop, the officer observed drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle, and the driver was arrested.

RCMP looking for vehicle after striking Portage house

On December 13, at about 6:30 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a vehicle striking a house at the corner of Lorne Avenue and 2nd Street NW in Portage.

The vehicle apparently attempted to turn down the back lane on 2nd Street NW and missed the turn, crossing the lawn of the residence and striking the house. The intersection was ice-covered and slippery at the time. Nobody was injured.

Police search for Long Plain man following firearm incident, warning he could be in Portage

Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers on Long Plain First Nation responded to a firearm discharge incident in the 100 block of Yellowquill Trail South on Wednesday.

Shortly after 7:00 p.m. on December 13, officers arrived on the scene and observed a vehicle that had been shot. Residents advised police that a man who had attended to a house in the area got into an argument with an occupant of the house before stealing from said house and shooting at a vehicle numerous times on the way out. Police say that no one was hurt during this incident.
