Gear up for free fishing weekend

Residents in Saskatchewan will have the opportunity to angle in waters throughout the province for free during the annual free fishing weekend. 

Sport Fish Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Murray Koob, explained the purpose of the weekend. 

Innovation invests $5 million into Saskatchewan

The Innovation Credit Union is determined to show members that they will continue to have a local presence after becoming the first federal credit union headquarters in Saskatchewan late last month. 

As a result, Innovation has announced a five-million-dollar Legacy Community & Development Grant Fund for Saskatchewan residents and projects within the province. 

Dunking delivers donation to The Center

The Center's goal to expand may happen sooner rather than later thanks to a generous donation.

The Kinettes Club of Swift Current has stepped up to the plate for the youth outreach operation, donating $2,500 to The Center's new administrative building.

Tracey Prang, vice president of the club, made the donation on behalf of the Kinettes Club of Swift Current.

Southwest restaurant worker rescued in human trafficking case

A human trafficking case has been linked to a worker at two southwest restaurants after Saskatchewan RCMP’s Swift Current Trafficking Response Team began investigating earlier this year. 

Through investigation, police determined that an adult female, originally from Bangladesh, was staying in Canada on a visitor’s permit when she responded to a job advertisement on a popular job bank, for work at a restaurant. 

Sentence laid after armed robbery in Eastend

Last week in Swift Current Provincial Court, Adam Kormendy received his sentence after initially being charged with Robbery using a Firearm in December of 2022. 

The sentencing comes after Kormendy pleaded guilty to three charges, including robbery, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order. 

The court handed down a sentence of 729 days in jail, which is equal to two years minus one day. 

Summer Reading Program unleashes imagination

The Summer Reading Program at the Swift Current Branch of the Chinook Regional Library has officially begun in Swift Current as a way to ignite young minds and inspire reading throughout the summer months. 

The program kicked off yesterday afternoon with a party that featured the Saskatchewan Science Centre demonstrating exciting experiments for the kids. 

Fatal collision on Trans Canada Highway over long weekend

Over the long weekend, Morse RCMP responded to a collision, which took the life of a 36-year-old male. 

At approximately 5:15 a.m., on July 2, police were called to the scene on Highway #1, located near Chaplin. 

The investigation determined that the vehicle came to rest in a body of water after leaving the roadway.
